WhiP Hackney Lounge Review | Style

If you take a glance at WhiP in passing, you’d be forgiven for not realizing right away that this is a barbershop. With a mix of used furniture, plants, a set of decks, and a vinyl stash, it looks (very cool) at someone’s living room – it’s just the retro barber chairs that make it. betray.

WhiP is an organic and eco-responsible hairstylist and barber shop with two branches; this lounge in Hackney and another inside Hatch in Homerton. They also take ecology seriously, stocking vegan products from Evo and Oway, having refillable bottles for shampoos, and only serving vegan drinks.

The Hackney Lounge really has the laid back vibe; there are only four chairs so it will never be crowded with people and hair dryers full. And you relax even more with an excellent head massage after washing your hair. From the initial consultation to the head massage to the cut itself, we felt in very safe hands (literally) with Creative Director James. He advised us what would be best for our locks while still listening to what we really wanted, cutting enough to get rid of dead ends without sacrificing too much length.

And WhiP does more than just hair; the salon has a mini record store inside and also hosts events so it’s a place to hang out even when you’re not lashing your hair back and forth.
