The area

Not exactly in the center, but Cambridge is tiny so that doesn’t matter – nowhere is far from nowhere else. And anyway, it’s a great place, especially at the start of summer, when its grassy spaces are full of students in various states of ecstasy or distress depending on whether they think their exams are going well or badly gone. Following the river in one direction you head towards Grantchester, in the other towards the town along the Willow-lined Backs lined with universities. Cambridge is eminently accessible on foot – flat and small and it’s hard to get lost deeply. If you’re up to the cobblestones cringe, bicycles are available at the hotel for free.

The service

Young, enthusiastic, full of beans. The restaurant and bar staff are attentive and, in the case of the restaurant, know not only the menu, having tasted everything, but also what the chef is trying to do, why certain dishes are the way they are, where various ingredients came and how they were prepared. Impressive.


The concierge can arrange spa treatments at the nearby glass factory. A gym and swimming pool are currently under construction and are expected to be completed by the end of 2021.

For families

There are eight family rooms and ten deluxe twin beds; ten rooms are communicating; 11 other bedrooms have sofa beds. Children (as well as their parents) will love the outdoor space around the hotel; those old enough to confidently ride a bike will want to hop on one of the free bikes. Cambridge is full of great museums; the polar museum is likely to appeal to a certain type of young adventurer. And then of course there are all those hundreds of punts just outside waiting to be requisitioned. The hotel works in close collaboration with Scudamore’s, the main boat rental company, and will welcome you in a refined atmosphere.


“Good general practices”, as the management puts it. The commitment to local and seasonal ingredients in the restaurant is exemplary.

Accessibility for people with reduced mobility

There are six accessible rooms, one with a full bathroom and several adjoining, if a caregiver’s room is required. Elevators serve the bar, restaurant and meeting spaces, as well as the upper floors and bedrooms, with the exception of the penthouse.

Nothing to report?

The fig leaf ice cream at the Garden House restaurant is made of leaves growing on a fig tree that stands, as it seems to have been doing for quite some time, a few steps from the hotel entrance on the Peterhouse side. According to Chief Adam Wood, the tree produces bad fruit but excellent leaves. When cooked properly, fig leaves impart a curious flavor, less that of the fig than that of the coconut. What is wonderful about ice cream.
