After Manam, Naga Chaitanya and Vikram K Kumar teamed up for another movie titled Thank You. The film was released in theaters today. Let’s see how it is.

Abhiram (Naga Chaitanya) is the most successful businessman in the American business world. But his self-absorbed and selfish nature drives everyone away from him, including his own girlfriend (Raashi Khanna). One day, a very moving incident makes him realize that he should express his gratitude to those who helped him during his difficult times. So he goes on a journey and goes back to the people and thanks them individually. How does he do it, that’s the story of the film.

Good points

The story is simple with no twists. It’s about the life of a selfish businessman and Naga Chaitanya has some solid variations. He gets to put on different phases of his life and plays all those roles with ease and we have to appreciate him for portraying those different shades superbly.

Raashii Khanna is gorgeous and she also plays well in her mature role. Other heroines Malavika Nair and Avika Gor also give their best. The Malavika and Chay track is quite good.

Despite playing small characters, Prakash Raj and Sampath perform well. Director Vikram K Kumar handles the visuals well as they are one of the best aspects of the movie.

Negative points

The key issue is the story. The public has been very familiar with these kinds of stories for quite some time now. Thank you is an emotional journey of a person but those emotions are not well realized on screen. Instead, the film features school and college flashbacks that feel mundane and boring.

The storyline is a big disappointment as Vikram Kumar’s brand is completely absent here. The drama could have been much better because one can easily predict what will happen next. It’s old school and beaten to death.

The love scenes between Naga Chaitanya and Raashii Khanna could have been shown better. The second half is a big downside as it’s filled with scenes that are late and won’t suit the sensibilities of today’s generation. They could have been cut for better storytelling.

Also, Thank You lacks mass fights, hit songs, and exciting elements to entertain the majority of the audience. During promotions, the team said that the movie had a bunch of Mahesh Babu references. But those scenes aren’t very impressive either.

Technical aspects

Vikram K Kumar is a successful director and generally the expectations are high. But, the magic of his previous films is missed in Merci. The director fails to tell the emotional journey in an interesting and engaging way. PC Sreeram must be appreciated for its marvelous cinematography. The visuals look great in many scenes.

As for the music, Thaman’s music is extremely disappointing as none of the songs make sense. The editing by Naveen Noli could have been better and he might have cut scenes to make Merci a better movie. The production values are good and you can witness that by watching the movie.

Overall, Merci is an old-school, coming-of-age drama that features nothing new. The pacing is slow, the scenes are dull, and the emotions create no impact. The best part of the film is the heartfelt performance of Chay Akkineni who is the saving grace.
