Cuban cuisine is a happy blend of Spanish, African and Taino cuisines – the indigenous people of the Caribbean. For the uninitiated, rumba embodies a harmony of percussive rhythms, colorful songs and dances that originated in colonial Cuba. The word rumba derives from the Cuban Spanish word rumbo which means party or party. In Cuban culture, the rumba is simply a way of life.

Rumba – Cuban Bar & Kitchen at Palm Jumeirah is a 200-seat stand-alone restaurant that attempts to recreate Cuba’s capital Havana of the 1950s, where dining was the center of a bustling nightlife.

Cuban-born Alberto Cuello is the mastermind behind Rumba, which opened its doors last year, despite Covid-19 challenges. It was a momentous occasion as Cuello’s cherished dream of bringing a swinging slice of Havana came true.

On Saturdays, the live band Cubache plays at the Cigar Lounge, to the delight of diners who let loose while enjoying a sumptuous meal.

For starters, diners can opt for salads such as empanadas de ropa vieja – an assortment of homemade pastries, shredded beef and aioli (garlic-seasoned mayonnaise), or camarones rellenos – shrimp, veal, cream cheese, panko (breadcrumbs that serve as a coating for fried or baked foods), cilantro, chipotle mayonnaise.

Picado cubana is a classic Cuban salad including tostones (fried plantains), yuca frita (fried cassava), potato croquettes, black bean empanadas (Spanish or Latin American pastry) and sweet potato flautas (filled with meat and cheese).

Cubans is a classic hot entrée and an assortment of roast veal, turkey ham, mojo criollo (bitter orange garlic dressing), mustard, Swiss cheese, butter and pickles that can be washed down with Cuban heritage cocktails.

For the main course, choose from masas fritas – crispy veal brisket, mojo criollo, maduros (fried sweet plantains), black bean stew, white rice and avocado – or beef steak (Wagyu entrecôte/Bife de chorizo or striploin/ Lomito or tenderloin) or a corn-fed chicken.
