Lyrics by Jessica Cooper
While touring along the French Riviera, one must make the inevitable stop at the iconic St Tropez. The choice of beach clubs and restaurants in St Tropez can be overwhelming, but those in the know know that the best place in St Tropez to enjoy a beachfront meal and lounge is Byblos Beach Ramatuelle. of the Byblos Hotel.
An unpretentious and laid-back gem set on the iconic white sand beach of Pampelonne, Byblos Beach Ramatuelle offers the quintessence of the Côte d’Azur atmosphere with an elegant and contemporary design influenced by the maritime world. The restaurant is open and airy with tall wooden beams that move the wind, paying homage to the sails of the yachts that still sail along the Riviera coastline.
Although the location is visually stunning, I was here to experience the eco-friendly and much-loved fine dining at Byblos Beach Restaurant. The restaurant offers light Mediterranean cuisine and what I like is that the ingredients are sourced from local farms and from Byblos. private gardens. The chefs make every effort to source ingredients from nearby market gardens, fisheries and farms and this shows in the thoughtful menu which offers a small but wide variety of offerings to suit almost any diet.
We started our lunch with grilled chicken and eggplant parmigiana which had classic Mediterranean flavors on a plate – moist chicken with slivers of herbed tomatoes and grilled eggplant which made for a super fresh and rustic dish. We also had a tuna steak served with seared sweet and sour peppers. The tuna steaks were well done and the peppers firm, slightly charred and deliciously tart and sweet. The portions here are generous but light, which is exactly what you want if you plan on swimming afterwards.
For dessert, we opted for a beautiful pavlova with light meringue petals artfully arranged in a red fruit coulis and locally sourced fresh strawberry sorbet on the side. Beach clubs tend to rely on “the place to be seen” and are a bit mediocre on the food front, but here the food is perfectly prepared and the passion for creating authentic dishes and well made can be seen in the open kitchen.
There is also a wide selection of cocktails (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), the former of which are very alcoholic and strong and can be easily taken on your personal deckchair on Byblos Beach Ramatuelle’s own beach club, just opposite the restaurant.
The most surprising pleasure of Byblos beach was the music. The DJ of the day always knows how to make the guests dance. The vibes here are contagious and soon even the most reserved diners were up and dancing or swaying in their seats.
After lunch, we simply had to hang out at the lively beach club of the Byblos hotel located on the sandy beach of Pampelonne a stone’s throw from the restaurant. With generously sized wooden deckchairs and beautiful openwork rope parasols, like the restaurant, the beach club carries the same fun and relaxed vibe that celebrates what St Tropez is all about: fun, chic and authentic. With great music to boot.
