Restaurant review: A Momento in St Annes might be small in size but it’s rich in flavor

Through the misted-up window we can see other guests already seated and enjoy the hospitality of the Alexandria Drive restaurant specializing in traditional Sicilian and Sardinian dishes.

Booking is essential, as the venue is compact to say the least – but much like the classic Fiat 500 pictured on the main wall – the design allows everyone to be comfortably seated.

Our hosts buzzed around us, switching from Italian to English, as we perused the menu as they served the surrounding tables.

This is one of the only menus I’ve seen that has soup which at £ 13.95 is the most expensive starter.

But what a soup it must be! – Zuppa del Mediterraneano, it’s filled with shrimp, haddock, squid, scallops and mussels.

Maybe for another day, because I think that would fill me up on its own.

Instead, I went for Il Cannolo alla Parmigiana, which is a crispy waffle tube, similar to what you might expect filled with cream for dessert.

Only this one was filled with a mousse of eggplant, parmesan, basil and cream of tomato which provided a delicate and perfect way to awaken my taste buds.

My husband Clive chose the bruschetta, elegantly served on a long platter with garnishes of cherry tomatoes and Parmesan shavings, while we also shared a bowl of olives.

To accompany our meal, we had a bottle of pinot grigio rose, with pale pink tones and a dry finish, while tap water was also provided.

Clive chose the slow-cooked lamb shank for his main course (although I much prefer its name to the Stinco di Angnello menu).

Fregola Sarda

The meat fell gently from the bone and was described as “succulent”, accompanied by roasted potatoes and mixed vegetables.

There is also hake, sea bass and chicken on the main menu which seemed tempting.

But since the restaurant celebrates the cuisine of two famous Italian islands, I opted for something from the pasta menu.

Linguines, spaghetti, ravioli are offered with sauces made from ingredients ranging from squid ink to shallot compotes.

Fregola Sarda caught my eye, described as a traditional Sardinian grilled pasta, with mussels, shrimp, squid, garlic chili, parsley and fresh cherry tomatoes.

It got top marks for presentation alone, but the main treat was to eat as I put every piece of seafood in my mouth.

The texture was tender, the mussels feeling like they had been plucked from the ocean.

We ended our meal with cappuccino coffees, but the desserts I saw being offered to other diners will definitely tempt me on our next visit.

Our bill including wine was £ 79.75.
