Set the scene The office-centric stretch of Michigan Avenue south of the Chicago River was instantly upgraded in the Pendry, rejuvenating both an architectural icon from 1929 – allegedly designed in the form of a bottle of champagne at the time. intoxicating from before the crash – and live up to its golden interiors with social aspects that channel a party feeling, from the bustling downstairs brasserie to the all-day rooftop rosé bar with icons of the horizon line. It’s a post-pandemic extension that the neighborhood – traditionally a business district but increasingly residential – may be able to walk through as it resumes its course of life.
The backstory The Pendry brand, now with eight locations, was born out of Montage Hotels & Resorts as a design-driven, next-generation modern luxury sister.
The rooms The beautiful rooms evoke the elegance of the tuxedo in a black-and-white color palette, highlighted by black-and-white architectural photos on the walls. The best views are reserved for the Specialty Suites located on the 35th and 36th floors in the building’s bottle-shaped neck.
Food and drink Behind 40-foot floor-to-ceiling windows, Venteux (French for “windy” as in “Windy City”) is an exceptional entry into the spirit of Pendry, serving inventive dishes of French origin from Chef Donald Young, the city’s youngest Michelin-starred chef prepares the prettiest (and most delicious) nicoise salad in town, and surprises like Eggs Five Ways, in which scrambled eggs are arranged in an omelet topped with cheese, Hollandaise sauce and grated salted eggs. But don’t stop there. Take one of the golden elevators to the roof of Château Carbide, specialist in rosé and sweet airs.
The spa Sorry no spa, but the fitness center is well-equipped with Peloton bikes and Tonal digital workout equipment.
The neighborhood / area At the edge of the loop, the Pendry region is hard to beat, whether you are doing business or visiting the sights. The Riverwalk and Millennium Park are only a block or two away, and the Art Institute of Chicago a little further. Explore the parks with one of the loaner bikes parked at the hotel (don’t try this in the crowded loop itself).
The service Service shines at Pendry, where concierges use text to keep in touch with customers, whether they want restaurant or route recommendations.
Eco-effort Well done for the bath products, which come in refillable pumps rather than small plastic jets.
Nothing to report? Light sleepers should avoid rooms facing Michigan Avenue due to noise.
