Overviews and Pilot Proposals from Security Working Group Under Review


Last week, the five task forces of the President’s Task Force on Community Safety provided recommendations for long-term solutions involving building safety and environmental design; individual security awareness, training and programs; community partnerships; communication strategies and tools; and personnel, technology and equipment resources. Recommendations that included a request for resources provided detailed proposals.

Proposals include the following:

  • Detailed presentation of the proposed solution
  • Justification with references to SWOT or benchmarking analyzes performed, if applicable
  • Risks if the proposal is not implemented
  • Estimates of operating, capital and personnel funds to adopt and maintain the solution

The steering committee is reviewing the recommendations and proposals and will meet with the university leadership team this week to discuss them. On Tuesday, May 31, the Security Working Group will hold its final meeting to share approved recommendations and discuss a transition to an operational implementation team. Decisions will be announced shortly after this meeting.

Feedback on Idea Submissions to the Security Working Group

The working group received 151 ideas or concerns submitted on the website, all of which were shared directly with the working group chairs and the steering committee. While there are a few themes common to all audiences, here are the top most important categories by audience:

Student Feedback

  • LIMO services – waiting times and high demand
  • Concerns over increased police numbers
  • AMU hours and accessibility for community members
  • Collaboration with the district and the city
  • Desire to know how Marquette supports the varied needs of the community

Feedback from faculty and staff

  • Mixed interest in degree of police presence
  • Environmental security – cameras, lighting, signage and structure/parking lot security
  • Concerns about implicit bias with security alerts
  • Commuters do not feel safe waiting for their journeys or at bus stops

Parent/Family Feedback

  • Support for more police presence
  • LIMO services – waiting times and high demand
  • Residence Security
  • Worried about the neighborhood – desire to deter non-students from coming to campus
  • Environmental Safety – cameras, lighting and more signs

Overall, the variation in comments highlights the continued importance of addressing security issues holistically – assessing infrastructure, personnel, resources and partnership.

Feedback on AMU swipe-in ​​access in the evening

As part of the Security Working Group process, various working groups have been involved in pilot projects or additional research to inform the proposals. The first major change announced on February 25 was the protocol for evening scan access to AMU.

Since this change, the AMU facilities team reports the following:

  • AMU reception staff reported minimal issues with the new entry process.
  • In two and a half months, about six people had to call reception to get in.
  • Event Services is monitoring the event schedule and the facilities team will adjust door lock times based on the event and its delay. It’s only been needed a few times so far, but the lockdown schedule is managed online, so it’s easy to set up and remove based on the calendar of events.

Residence Access Pilot Overview

On March 23, the pilot to test a new secure entry process began at Humphrey Hall where anyone with a MUID tapped their ID to gain access. Once inside, the existing check-in process remains the same as before, with students needing to present their MUID at reception to enter the residence. As part of the pilot, the Residence Life Office spoke with representatives of peer institutions to learn more about their secure systems, identify potential issues, and establish best practices. Additionally, Residence Life surveyed ward staff and residents for feedback in April.

Key survey information includes:

  • 51% of residents report feeling their increased safety
  • 72% of receptionists report feeling their increased security
  • 80% of receptionists say they believe resident safety has increased

Issues that surfaced during the pilot, such as MUID scanning issues and issues with the door, were resolved as they were reported.

The pilot and feedback support the university’s decision to implement secure access to all residence halls for the fall 2022 semester.
