Here’s how to plan a romantic getaway together for something out of the ordinary.
Lake Nona Wave Hotel Reviews
Sometimes in a place as classy as this, I fear the experience is all about luxury and ambience, but not so much about quality of service. I’m happy to report that the Lake Nona Wave Hotel is magnetic and enjoyable through and through.
Admittedly, the Lake Nona Wave Hotel is beyond my normal scope of experience. I’m not fashionable. I don’t want to have my own aesthetic and such. And that’s exactly why a night in this place left me feeling renewed.
It really is an escape from the ordinary. This new hotel is the perfect setting for couples who want to get away from it all and spend time together somewhere very different from the daily grind.
Important note: we received most of our stay for free. Our accommodation, a meal and a mixology class were provided to us free of charge. All other expenses were not provided.

We used the tablet in the room to chat with reception – who responded very quickly. We also took advantage of the smart TV’s Chromecast feature to be able to stream shows we’ve recorded on an app.
The shower is nice and refreshing. The luxurious shampoo and conditioner from France has done wonders for my hair. And yes, we even enjoyed the Toto Neorest smart toilet with heated seat. Don’t hit it until you try it!

BACAN signature restaurant
The decor and veneer of BACÁN made me nervous. Our guests themselves were as elegant as the hotel and its restaurants. Fortunately, BACÁN is all about substance.
The quality of food and drink matches its level of ambiance. This Michelin-recommended dining experience is undoubtedly elevated. And yet, it was inviting.
Starting the evening, we ordered the lobster and burrata tostadas. A perfect plate to share. We both had our own blue corn tostada stacked with chunks of lobster meat, marinated tomatoes, burrata, herb cream and grilled pepita. Every bite left us satisfied, full of bright, fresh flavor. It pairs perfectly with my glass of Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand.
My husband orders the Don Juan cocktail made with Four Roses Small Batch, Tippler’s Orange, 18.21 Havana & Hide. It is smoked at the table and is a sumptuous way to start our experience.
For our main course, the Crispy Whole Florida Snapper made for sharing tempted us. Instead, we chose to each have our own entrance. I selected the Branzino A La Plancha with peas and mint, wild rice, candied lemon and crispy purple cabbage. Branzino is one of my favorite fish to order at restaurants, and the one from BACÁN blew me away. I had concerns about the wild rice, thinking it wouldn’t pair well with the fish, and somehow it worked like a charm.
My husband savored every last bite of his entree. The duck breast with green tomatillo salsa, candied rainbow chard, pumpkin, foie gras and tapioca chips is an interesting and delicious combination. Every bite of everything we ordered was delicious and prepared with the utmost care.
We opted for dessert on our next stop. It was hard to resist as we enjoyed our meal, but a mixology class was waiting for us upstairs.
Located on the second floor are Haven Kitchen, Haven Lounge and Haven Pool. The Haven Kitchen is the main dining room, open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is a lovely bar here which is open to quench your thirst every day of the week.
Behind Haven Kitchen is the chic Haven Lounge. This nightlife hotspot gave me the Vegas vibe in the best way. The fact that it is located behind the Haven Kitchen dining room gives it an air of exclusivity which I was delighted with.
It’s the perfect place to party or just end the evening. This is a weekend spot as Haven Lounge is only open Thursday through Sunday from 7 p.m. to midnight. The highlight here is the incredible cocktail menu. But, there is also good food.
As part of our experience at the Lake Nona Wave Hotel, we were invited to join a mixology class at the Haven Lounge.
We had the opportunity to learn how some of the Haven Lounge’s signature cocktails are made with the personal attention of a lovely bartender.
Here is what we appreciated during our experience:
- Return of the Daq: Diplomático Exclusiva Rum, Domain De Canton Ginger Liqueur, Lime, Dragonfruit, Bitterman’s Elemakule Tiki Bitters
- Monkey See: Monkey Shoulder Scotch, Tippler’s Orange Liqueur, Yuzu, Orgeat with Avocado Stone
- 46 shades of gray: Maker’s 46 Bourbon, Faretti Biscotti Liqueur, Lineage Coffee, Vanilla, Xocolatl Mole Bitter, Fee Brothers Walnut Bitters
Every cocktail we heard about seemed better than the last. It was hard to choose a favourite. If you’re heading here to wrap up your evening, I recommend 46 Shades Of Gray as your nightcap due to its coffee and vanilla notes. We also ordered the Carrot Cake dessert to snack on. It’s a modern take on a classic dessert and we loved it.

Don’t miss the sculpture garden! Set in 50,000 square feet of scenic outdoor space, the Lake Nona Sculpture Garden features lush tropical flowers, approximately 300 palm trees, and a world-class collection of sculptures. We really loved strolling in the garden. We went just before dinner, as the sun was starting to set, bringing a more pleasant temperature and a beautiful evening glow.
Other fun things to do at Lake Nona:
One night did not leave us enough time to fully experience everything. We didn’t have time next to the posh Haven pool. And it would have been really cool to go to Lake Nona Performance Club for the Rox Climbing Gym, or some of the group classes. Which is free for hotel guests during their stay.
More You can rent bicycles at the hotel. to bypass Lake Nona. And we would have liked to try the Beep self-driving shuttles that connect downtown Lake Nona to the Canvas restaurant and market and other destinations in the Lake Nona area.
Private tennis lessons on the USTA campus
After a glorious night enjoying the hotel’s restaurants and lounges, we woke up to our luxurious king-size bed. Part of me wished I could have stayed in bed longer, soaking up the wonderful atmosphere in the room. But alas, we had 10:00 a.m. private tennis lessons scheduled on our behalf.
The The Lake Nona Wave Hotel is less than 2 miles from the USTA National Campus. This incredible campus is home to 100 tennis courts, including two arena-style championship courts, a family area and pickle ball courts.
My husband and I are by no means athletes. We stay in relatively good shape, but we don’t regularly exercise together. Having the opportunity to do something different together was both exciting and a little unnerving. Kind of like a first date.
Doing something you’ve never done together is great for your relationship. This is especially true if you’ve been together for a few years.
Our instructor gave us great tips. His friendly demeanor never wavered no matter how much help we needed.
What a thrill it was to learn more about how to play tennis properly and to be able to spend time together on the court. This perfectly sums up what we enjoyed so much on our quick couples getaway to Lake Nona. We did something new and a little out of our comfort zone, in a place that feels like its own world.
