Netflix has now offered the movie Monica, O My Darling which stars talented actors like Rajkummar Rao, Huma Qureshi and Radhika Apte in prominent roles. The movie is now streaming on the OTT platform, and let’s see how it is.
Mr. Jayant Arkhedkar (Rajkummar Rao) is given a huge responsibility as a board member of Unicorn, a robotics company. The CEO of the company believes in Jayant and entrusts him with this high position. Jayant is about to marry Nikki (Akansha Rajan Kapoor), the CEO’s daughter. But Jayant is having an affair with Monica Machado (Huma Qureshi), who works at the same company. Monica becomes pregnant and begins blackmailing Jayant for money. Jayant is shocked when he learns that Nishikanth Adhikari (Sikander Kher), the son of CEO and Accounts Officer Arvind Swamy (Bhagavathi Perumal), is also in an affair with Monica. Monica starts blackmailing the three, and so they decide to kill her. The rest of the film is about how these three tried to get rid of Monica and the situations they faced during that time.
Good points :
First, music director Achint Thakkar should be appreciated for the diversity of retro-style music that was played throughout the film. It gives a whole new feel to the movie. Plus, the background score builds excitement, especially in the second hour.
The movie has plenty of twists in the second half that are hard to guess, and the way the fun is built around a kill streak using retro-style music is just brilliant. The scenario is too spicy in the last hour and keeps the audience in suspense until the end.
The performers’ performances are top-notch and everyone competes with each other to give their best. Rajkummar Rao is a natural performer and plays casually in the assigned role. Huma Qureshi attracts with her glamor and does well like Monica. Radhika Apte as a cop is good. Bhagavathi Perumal is just fitting in the given role as a strained family man.
The surprise package is Sukant Goel, and he’s making his mark despite less screen time. The creators attempted a new way of storytelling rather than sticking to one appreciable pattern.
Negative points :
The film is a neo-noir crime comedy thriller, a genre not explored by many filmmakers. As a result, the film will not appeal to all sections of the audience. The film therefore targets a niche segment, and a few may also find it silly.
The narrative for the first half hour or so isn’t engaging, with a few flat sequences going on. Additionally, the character establishments of the main cast are not well done. More caution on this aspect would have made things more interesting.
The violent parts might be hard to watch and digest for some. Also, a key character in the film has no stability, which makes one wonder about the same. Finally, the open ending might also disappoint a few.
The music, as previously discussed, is the soul of the film. The songs are as good as the background music and part of the story. Swapnil Sonawane’s cinematography is good and the visuals capture the mood of the film. Production values are good. However, Netflix must pay special attention to Telugu dialogues which seem irritating and strange. The editing is clean, and we feel that the film ended very quickly.
Director Vasan Bala’s presentation in the second hour makes the film enjoyable, and the idea of adding some retro music to the proceedings is great. However
he should have been careful about certain aspects, like the set-up of the story and the shortcomings of the characters.
Overall, Monica, O My Darling offers a different experience for audiences with more twists and offbeat comedy. The performances are excellent from the main actors, but the very nature of the film may not appeal to everyone. Also, the first hour runs on a flat note. Nevertheless, those who want to try something new and crazy can try this movie this weekend.
