Hotel Reviews: Hotel Le Monêtier, Le Monêtier-les-Bains in France

Serre Chevalier is often considered the hidden gem of south-eastern France and one of the most popular ski resorts for local French people. However, visiting the French Alps isn’t just a winter activity, there’s plenty to enjoy in the summer too, from hiking to rafting, and Hotel Le Monêtier is one of the communes that makes a great base for exploring. the region.

The hotel offers a clean and minimalist Scandinavian style

Hotel Le Monêtier offers breathtaking views of the region, including snow-capped glaciers that you can observe even during the summer months. Unlike some alpine resorts, they are open all year round especially since they are only a few minutes drive from Briançon, which is the highest town in France at 1,326 meters. This is a relatively new hotel in the area having just opened before the pandemic and although the building dominates the local village skyline, it is still a boutique hotel with only 21 rooms.

The hotel offers a clean and minimalist Scandinavian style. The uncluttered nature of the hotel is evident from the entrance since the restaurant reception also serves as the hotel reception. There are lots of wooden beams and exposed brickwork to give off that alpine resort vibe. Their website is especially handy in helping you depict the landscape with their “go winter” or “go summer” option. The first page is littered with scenic white powder mountains and suggestions for off-piste mountain experiences, while the second features photos of crystal clear lakes and enjoying the great outdoors just steps from the hotel.

It is useful to know that they accept pets, that they have a 24-hour reception, free and unlimited Wi-Fi and free parking with charging stations for electric cars. There is also an elevator to ensure those with accessibility needs are catered for.

All bedrooms are furnished to a high standard and face the mountain peaks

There may only be 21 rooms, but there are seven different categories to choose from, ranging from Cocoons to Family Comforts with balconies. All rooms face the mountain peaks. The bedrooms are furnished to a high standard with a USB charging station and large screen LED TV. Luxury bathrobes, slippers and nourishing toiletries are provided. The key point is to make sure you book a room with a terrace and you will feel even more immersed in breathtaking surroundings.

If you’re visiting with family and/or friends, you might also consider an apartment if you’re looking for extra space, including open kitchens. They are located 200 meters from the hotel building and are managed independently from the hotel. The most spacious apartment can accommodate up to eight people.

Food and drink

The hotel bar and restaurant, Stabatio is a foodie magnet in the village

Their bar and restaurant, Stabatio is a foodie magnet in the village. Sometimes alpine cuisine can be rather stereotypical, think fondue, raclette or tartiflette – cheese is a religion when you’re in the Alps. However, at Stabatio they are much more progressive with their menu. Deconstructed tuna and wakame sushi would be brave even by Shoreditch standards, but in the Alps it’s revolutionary. Their offerings are not bound by geographical borders, so you get Greek gyros, Italian penne and a very vegetarian burger made with soy steak, candied onions and Savoy cheese.

Giant wooden benches and a relaxed open kitchen create a welcoming atmosphere, where you are more than likely to make new continental friends.

Their mountain style breakfast is also worth highlighting, as they only focus on local produce, so you can get exotic strawberry and apricot juices and an assortment of freshly made jams. The pastry section is a feast for the senses and you can be forgiven for indulging in a few as you are more than likely to burn calories on your afternoon sporting adventures.

It’s all about the great outdoors. Although the hotel is located in a commune outside of Briançon, it is incredibly well connected. You are only a few steps from the famous Grands Bains du Monêtier where their thermal waters supply their innumerable aquatic spaces. From outdoor hot tubs to heated hammams, they have it all. You are also only a few steps away from the starting point of a white water rafting experience with Raft Day. Paddling along the crystal clear glacier waters of the Alps is one of those must-do items you need to check off.

In a word

If you want to experience the Alps away from the typical tourist destinations, head to Serre Chevalier. At Hotel Le Monêtier, you will enjoy a warm French welcome and an incredible location to explore the majestic mountains.
