Hotel Reviews: 1 Hotel Toronto, Toronto in Canada

A luxury lifestyle hotel brand, 1 Hotels is leading the way in showing that there can be a happy marriage between luxury and sustainability. They’re a nature-inspired brand, and here we take a look at their first outpost in Canada to see why they’re causing waves in the hospitality industry.

I doubt there is another hotel brand that has such a strong brand identity as 1 Hotels. The words “urban oasis” couldn’t be more apt to describe this eco-chic hotel. You could be forgiven for thinking you’ve stepped into the great Canadian outback the moment you step into their lobby.

Fallen oak, maple and walnut trees are tastefully repurposed into coffee tables, chairs and artwork created by Toronto artisan Just Be Woodsy. Rumor has it that there are more than 3,000 plants on site, including species native to Ontario. The biophilic living wall is particularly eye-catching, which induces a sense of calm and serenity in the lobby.

1 Hotel Toronto is located in King West Village, widely regarded as Canada’s coolest neighborhood. All major tourist attractions like the CN tower and the harbor are within walking distance. Even for more remote locations, you can use the hotel’s free bike rental or they even have a Tesla waiting for hotel guests, which is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Sustainability issues are subtly mentioned but never imposed on customers. You’ll find they don’t use single-use plastic products, even though the ban in Canada doesn’t come into effect until the end of 2025. They have an organic composter on site that reduces 12,000 pounds of waste each month. less than 1,000 pounds of compost. This in turn is used to power the plants on site and nearby parks.

The natural element continues in the spacious rooms and suites

Natural elements extend into hotel rooms, too — reclaimed wood, local plants, and limestone feature prominently in the design. They use 100% organic cotton household linen to ensure the comfort of their guests but also a healthier environment.

All your modern comforts are present, from a Nespresso machine to a 55″+ HD TV, including a soft pillow and a mattress topper. They have filtered water taps and yoga mats to help guests adopt a cleaner lifestyle.

The hotel has carefully selected a sustainable toiletries brand, Bamford, which smells divine with the presence of geranium, lavender, peppermint and tonka. They offer plush cotton bathrobes and slippers and little touches like an hourglass in the rain shower stand out, so you avoid using too much water.

Food and drink

The hotel’s flagship restaurant is the popular 1 Kitchen

Considering the size of the hotel, this is very impressive, they offer three dining options as well as a funky cocktail bar in the lobby in the form of Flora. Harriet’s Rooftop is the light snack/sushi bar that pairs perfectly with its stunning rooftop pool, while Casa Madera is their dining experience that skilfully combines Mexican and Mediterranean flavors.

1 Hotel’s flagship restaurant is 1 Kitchen, which is particularly popular during the day and therefore reservations are highly recommended. It is a paradise for health conscious people. The farm to table concept is very present as they get important products from their gazebo. It is a zero waste restaurant with an impressive list of organic and bio-dynamic wines as well as cold pressed juices. Their salads are ultra-fresh, like their “greenest goddess” salad with a long list of proteins you can add.

Visitors to the city can enjoy incredible views from the Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada

Speaking of sustainability, you should head to Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada. You can learn about species native to Canadian waters, such as the giant Pacific octopus and brightly colored American lobsters. They have a dangerous lagoon where you can see sand tiger sharks as well as green moray eels. Throughout the exhibit, you’ll learn a lot about conservation efforts and also about sustainable seafood.

Next to the aquarium is the iconic CN Tower. It was built in 1973 as the tallest freestanding structure in the world (which stood until 2007). You get an uninterrupted view of the Toronto skyline, and you’ll also see how many new condominiums have sprung up on the harbor in the past five to ten years. They also have a 360° revolving restaurant for those who love seafood platters with an exceptional view.

In a word

1 Hotel Toronto is a breath of fresh air in the often corporate world of luxury hotels. It successfully showcases its eco-friendly credentials without any reduction in luxury five-star comfort. It’s a hotel experience that will change your mind once you’ve stayed.

1 Hotel Toronto offers rooms from CAD 500 per night.
