Melissa Nightingale spends a night at the Wyndham Garden in Queenstown

Location: At the foot of the Remarkables and a stone’s throw from downtown Remarkables Park.

Style: The Wyndham Garden is simple and comfortable and caters primarily to business travelers.

Price: Rooms range from $150-200 per night.

Perfect for: Anyone who needs a base for traveling further afield in the South Island and wants to stay closer to the airport.

Recording experience: It only took a few moments and the staff member at reception was friendly and helpful.

Bedroom: Having come to Queenstown on a freezing and windy May weekend, walking into my room was a welcome break from the cold. With the heat pump already blowing a steady stream of warm air into the living room and the comfortably sized kitchenette, I could already feel my hands melting. The view of the mountains from the large windows is absolutely stunning and definitely the highlight of this hotel.

There is a two-seater sofa, a dining table, a kitchenette and a wall-mounted TV which can also be watched from the bedroom, which is separated from the living room by sliding doors. The bedroom in the Wyndham Garden One Bedroom Apartment is small with a high window behind it giving yet another view of the snow capped mountains.

The bathroom: There’s a small bathroom attached to the bedroom with a toilet, vanity and shower, as well as a clothes dryer and washing machine combo, which I took advantage of to avoid lugging a load of laundry to the home.

Food and drink: Wyndham Garden does not have room service but is located in a cluster of shops with cafes such as Eatery by Frank’s (I can highly recommend the Spanish Eggs for breakfast). There are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat, otherwise there is a supermarket within walking distance. There is also a cafe on the ground floor of the hotel.

Facilities: The hotel has a gym, as well as a place to store snow gear for anyone planning to hit the slopes on their trip. Conference rooms are available upon reservation.

In the neighborhood: It’s only a 15 minute walk from the airport for those who don’t have too much luggage, otherwise it’s only a short drive. Queenstown town center is around 15 minutes away by car. There is also the nearby shopping center and a library.

An Uber ride into town costs at least $30, but buses serve the area.

Accessibility: The hotel is fully accessible.
