Looking out of The Greenhouse at Dusit Thani Laguna Singapore, I am slightly disoriented.
The planes fly over the green fairways and the dunes which follow one another in a succession of endless curves. With no tall buildings, skyscrapers, or apartment buildings nearby, it’s easy to feel out of place, but deliciously out of place after nearly a year of being confined to home.
Through the toroidal facade of glass and steel reminiscent of the jewel of Changi Airport, the skylight shines on every table, instantly enhancing the ambiance of diners. While I would have liked to have been transported on this plane, I happily return to my plate at the Thai steamed barramundi, just as nourishing and nostalgic for the vacation spent in the land of smiles.
Lots of walks on the Singaporean arm of this famous Thai hotel chain. Nestled on the grounds of Laguna National Golf & Resort, it is the first hotel in the country to offer access to a duo of expansive championship golf courses.
Golfing legend Tiger Woods played at Laguna Golf Club and I keep that in mind as I am taken on a tour of the chic premises. The check-in process is quick and smooth, with high-tech features that include a treadmill for your clubs, leading you to golf carts each equipped with their own GPS system. Luxurious changing rooms and changing rooms are a natural part of the course.
For golfers, membership comes with its perks – that’s where the hotel comes in. But for restaurateurs who desperately need a vacation, the property has thankfully taken a look at wellness.
Isolation of destinations
Dusit Thani Laguna Singapore is a sprawling destination in itself. Unlike properties in Sentosa, where island activities are the main draw of stays, the hotel invites you to spend time here and nowhere else. Its surroundings are under construction, but in case you are worried about noise, you are fully insulated from the chaos and even the low revs of the plane’s engine despite the hotel’s proximity to the airport.
Seen from the outside, the property offers a spectacular view. Like the golf courses that surround it, it resembles an undulating mound with its curvilinear roof. A floor-to-ceiling bay facade overlooks the resort’s centerpiece: its three swimming pools that face eight pavilions, each equipped with its own plunge pool.
Elsewhere, design elements are kept in a contrast; a curved, spiraling concrete staircase juxtaposes the restaurant’s warm wood and cane elements, dressed in hanging foliage and houseplants to reflect the abundance of greenery outside.
Like the landscape beyond, Dusit Thani Laguna Singapore is kept as a deliberately low-rise building, with just four floors of rooms set in trailing corridors. These are available in several categories, ranging from 36-square-meter deluxe rooms with pool views or an adjoining patio with pool access, to suites that include an outdoor tub, rainfall shower, and outdoor kitchen. . Mainly furnished in beige and neutral tones, the rooms guarantee a comfortable night’s sleep with duck-down pillows and duvets and even a Dream Bed menu that offers a pillow and mattress topper on request.
The other room amenities are perfect for a weekend respite – spacious bathrooms included. If you work from home, a Lavazza roast ground coffee machine in the room and a large workspace, with USB and power outlets, next to a pool view, are all you need to break the load. monotony of your daily routine.
Are you staying on a rainy day? A yoga mat, board games, and a Nintendo Switch are things you can ask for to fill your time.
The hotel has two main restaurants. The aforementioned greenhouse is a forest-themed space that serves an array of multi-ethnic cuisines, served in exhibit kitchens that include Thai, Nikkei, Indian Tandoor, Mediterranean, and Chinese cuisine. As a Thai branded hotel, one expects the best of the latter here but won’t be disappointed. Order the Pla Kapong Nueng, the barramundi steamed with green chili; the Nam Tok Neua, the Thai wagyu beef salad; and classics like Tom Kha Gai and Phad Thai. Each has hot and sweet and sour notes that will hit the nail on the head.
Mornings offer a la carte breakfast with choices ranging from local dishes to Western classics. Adjacent to the restaurant is the intimately spaced Legends Bar & Lounge, which will open this year, with cocktails, premium wines and bar bites for all to accompany live music. At Tee Deck, the poolside restaurant is an open-air patio serving burgers and grills.
Well-being takes precedence at the hotel spa, Deverana Wellness. The high-ceilinged space is inspired by a paradise garden concept. I experienced the signature 90-minute massage, which began with a selection of four oils, each targeting different moods. The massage involved the therapist targeting my pressure points using their forearms and elbows in a combination that the spa describes as a combination of Thai, Ayurvedic, and Shiatsu techniques. A few minutes later, I walked away to the sound of the soothing music and the smell of oranges and kaffir limes as my muscle tension faded.
For those who want more than a day at the spa, they can choose from various treatments such as a rose and milk bath, facials, and even massages for children aged 6 to 14. But if taking the kids to the spa is the last thing on your mind, the hotel also offers in-room nanny service.
For fitness enthusiasts, the 24-hour gym, measuring 369 square meters, is one of the largest on offer at a local hotel. It is surrounded by greenery and offers a range of free weights, gymnastic equipment and machines for a variety of workouts. Stations are widely spaced to ensure social distancing. If swimming is your speed, the pool area includes a pool for advanced swimmers, a relaxation pool with Jacuzzis, and a children’s pool.
For intense relaxation and recovery, Devarana Wellness recently launched a three-pronged program that relies on Pause for Mindfulness and Mental Awareness; Focus for physical vitality (Focus); and Growth for the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle through the establishment of a community. These will be cultivated through a range of meditation and yoga sessions, workshops, educational courses on personal stress management, nutrition and empowerment.
But if doing nothing is your idea of bliss, spend the long afternoons lounging in the sun by the pool. At least that’s our version of wellness.
