Hotel Review: Cameron House, Loch Lomond in Scotland

Lyrics by Anjana Gosai

Scotland is world renowned for offering spectacular scenery and the best of wilderness. Located precisely where the Scottish Lowlands and Highlands meet, Loch Lomond is one of the country’s true gems and an equally popular destination for visitors seeking adventure, relaxation or a bonhomie wanderlust. .

For those wishing to enjoy sumptuous views over Scotland’s largest loch between style and comfort, Cameron House on the South Shores offers luxury and heritage in equal measure. No wonder Barack Obama checked into the hotel when attending the COP26 summit in 2021.

Just over half an hour’s drive from Glasgow, the five-star Cameron House hotel has been a favorite getaway for the city’s well-to-do for many years. The magnificent baronial mansion sits right on the banks of the loch and is surrounded by 400 acres of countryside.

The main 17e century underwent a full refurbishment after a fire in 2017 and has been meticulously restored retaining many of the original features as well as a new lobby bar, refurbished leisure club, tavern bar and library with touches lush interiors from Glasgow design studio Timorous Beasties.

The hotel’s iconic seaplane, one of the first things you see on arrival, provides an ever-present visual reminder of the spirit of adventure embraced by Cameron House, which offers a long list of activities on the loch , the earth and, in fact, the sky.

Whether it’s a honeymoon, a couple’s getaway, or a family getaway, there’s a whole host of action-packed experiences and quieter activities to explore. As this is Scotland, there is also a range of wet weather activities to ensure that a rainy day cannot ruin your plans.

Rooms and suites feature classic Scottish decor with touches of contemporary chic

Cameron House is home to 276 rooms including 28 suites to suit varying needs; however, all are equipped with luxurious amenities. Decor is classic Scottish with touches of contemporary chic. The Auld House, in the restored 17th century mansion, offers 14 stunning suites, including the two-storey Cameron Suite and the one-of-a-kind Tower Suite located in the hotel’s original tower, with a spiral staircase from the bedroom which leads to a separate sitting area with wonderful views over the loch.

We stayed in one of the hotel’s classic family rooms – an ideal base for anyone traveling with children, who will simply love the comfy corner bunk bed with its own flat screen TV. Adorable mini bathrobes, slippers and coloring games are also provided for the little ones, which are thoughtful additions.

The hotel has several dining options available to guests

With all the vigorous activity on offer at Cameron House, having a regular refueling strategy is essential. Luckily, the hotel offers fantastic dining options with six restaurants and five bars to choose from.

The Cameron Grill offers the finest local produce, from grass-fed Scottish beef, whole lobster to hand-dipped scallops. Savor afternoon teas on three levels in one of the comfy sofas in the Art Deco-inspired lobby bar. Delicious children’s afternoon teas are also available here.

Parents will be happy to hear that kids’ menus are offered for different age groups, with dishes such as fish goujons, macaroni and cheese, or a 3oz beef tenderloin with fries. At the edge of the loch, the Boat House Restaurant is the ideal setting to enjoy a frutti di mare pizza or cod breadcrumbs and fries, while soaking up the scenery.

If you fancy an evening of fine dining, the recently opened Tamburrini and Wishart offers a five-course tasting menu that changes fortnightly and includes contemporary twists on Scottish dishes. The restaurant has just been awarded three coveted AA rosettes and is a must for a special occasion.

For those who enjoy a quick drink, head to the Great Scots’ Bar, which serves over 300 varieties of the country’s most famous drink, amidst portraits of great Scots greats, from Sean Connery to Rod Stewart.

Spa

Cameron Club facilities include a hydrotherapy pool and a 20 meter tranquility pool

Cameron House’s award-winning spa is located at the Cameron Club, three miles from the main property. One of the hotel’s gracious concierges drove me to the spa for an afternoon of pampering and relaxation. Here you will find a rooftop infinity pool with views over Ben Lomond.

There’s an indoor hydrotherapy pool, a 20-meter tranquility pool as well as thermal experiences – including a sauna, steam room, body-warming caldarium and infrared sauna. There are 17 treatment rooms, including a couples room, mud room and relaxation suite. I can confirm that the treatments are performed professionally with Espa and Carita products.

The Cameron Club is home to The Carrick – an 18-hole golf course

Golfers will be delighted as the Cameron Club is also home to The Carrick, an 18-hole championship golf course. We really enjoyed a one hour family golf lesson with PGA Pro Robbie King who helped us perfect our swing and grip.

Those wishing to learn more about the unique geology and history of Loch Lomond, formed after glacial erosion at the end of the last ice age, should book a speedboat tour. Our knowledgeable guide took us for a fact-filled afternoon, including a look at Inchconnachan – the island where a colony of wallabies roam in the wild.

The activities don’t stop there. There really is something for everyone, from soaring above the loch on the aforementioned seaplane to jet-skiing, falconry experiences and Segway safaris.

If the weather isn’t playing ball there’s plenty to do inside and the Cameron Leisure Club is a highlight. Next to an 18 meter pool is an epic family pool with an exhilarating waterslide that exhausted my kids. A well-equipped gym with a range of fitness classes is also available for guests to use at their leisure.

Indoor entertainment is catered for in the newly opened 29-seat cinema, which offers a program of new releases, classics and family favourites. We had a choice between Mel Gibson’s classic Braveheart or the recent Thor: Love and Thunder.

Children are also welcome at the Tavern Bar, which has a pool table, pinball machine, darts, table football and big screens showing sports.

In a word

Cameron House offers contemporary luxury with Scottish heritage at its centre. Service is smooth and simple and the wide range of activities on offer sets this property apart, ensuring that it remains the ultimate base from which to enjoy the spectacular scenery and nature of Loch Lomond.
