Mental health, although a major concern throughout the year, is particularly important to prioritize now. From political pressures to inflation to the lingering effects of COVID still in place, it is essential to keep these external stressors at bay.
I’m someone who is largely influenced by my surroundings, both physically (like a cluttered office) and emotionally (if there are too many sad headlines on my Twitter feed). So, I recently did a personal audit to set my day up for success – and meditation is high on my list.
Now I’ve heard it all before: How do you have time to meditate? How can you sit still for thirty minutes? Well, let me tell you, once you start adding it to your morning routine, you won’t regret it. And I have Head space thank for that.
The guided platform for meditation, sleep, stress and mindfulness has completely changed my days in the best possible way. On the days that I work from home, I go still woke up at 5am to sit quietly and dive into my Headspace app (after: one of my Obé Fitness classes, before: my iced coffee). Same goes for the days I commute to my New York office – when I’m on the NJ Transit bus, Headspace is activated through my AirPods (after all, easy hands-free listening + expert-led meditation = pure happiness).

First of all: What is Headspace?
Head space, which was designed to “improve the health and happiness of the world,” according to its site, provides science-based meditation and mindfulness tools to help plant the seeds of healthy habit formation. You reap what you sow, after all, and sanity is what Headspace wants you to take root and thrive on.
Additionally, the platform has over 70 million members, has over 600,000 reviews, and is used in 190 countries around the world. Whether you’re looking to have a pre-planned daily wellness program (featuring morning and evening meditations and classes, plus an “afternoon lift”) or want to explore easy to track – like Mindful Money and Mindful Eating – Headspace serves as a top meditation app to subscribe to.
In 28 studies published in some of the leading peer-reviewed mindfulness journals, Headspace has been shown to have favorable outcomes of interventions including stress reduction, improved focus, increased compassion, decrease in aggression, increased resilience, reduced burnout, increased positivity and improvement in satisfaction with life.
At Headspace, the consumer journey comes first. “We meet members in the moment, producing relevant and timely content to help them navigate everyday situations, life’s hurdles and moments of crisis,” Brown adds.
Advantages and disadvantages of Headspace: our opinion
Before, we have listed the pros and cons of Head space so you can easily go through each of our review points one by one. After using the platform for months now, we can attest that it’s worth it, it helps bring more joy to our days, and it’s something to look into.
- You can connect on iOS and Android devices: Headspace does not give preferential treatment to specific phone brands. Its mission is always the same: to offer accessible meditation and well-being programs on site, when and where you need them.
- You can select courses to follow or individual meditations: Headspace’s rich library of relevant and relevant topics – like navigating injustice, managing anger and achieving mindfulness at work – encourages you to want to open the app at least once a day
- You can track your progress: In Headspace’s stats section, you can see your average meditation time, total meditation time, and number of sessions you’ve done since you first used the app. Plus, you can track your stress over time with monthly checks (think: your virtual wellness diary).
- Your daily walks have improved: Headspace’s ‘Walk’ library offers classes up to 40 minutes long that are well labeled – ranging from nature walks and city walks to mindful cafe walks and nature walks. ‘intention.

- The crushing offers: Ironically, for a meditation app, its vast catalog of courses is a bit daunting to sort through. But, if you’re like me and want to try everything it has to offer, you can plan your meditations ahead of time to combat its full range of options.
- Repetitive courses: While Headspace is used every day to maximize your membership (or every few days), some of its offerings can be a little repetitive, for example, if you’re looking to steer your wellness goals toward a particular topic (like conscious budgeting). If you have never struggled in the financial field – or if you are currently in a good position – you will not be attracted to these meditations. So if you’re just focusing on a particular topic (eg, stress relief in general), some offers may seem like a broken record. Personally, I enjoyed the variety, although that may be a letdown for some.
- The lack of video components, sometimes: If you like the idea of podcasts, Headspace is 100% for you. If you’d rather watch a video of someone meditating or explaining meditation to you, Headspace’s video lessons are a bit lacking. But that’s made up for by his videos under 10 minutes to lift your mood (I once watched a video of a hairdresser who helped the homeless population feel better). While uplifting to watch, it wasn’t the actual meditation.
How much does Headspace cost?
Head space costs $5.83 per month when opting for the annual subscription ($69.96) or $12.99 per month when opting for a monthly subscription ($155.88). That said, it’s better value to sign up for its annual subscription, especially if you’re looking to up your wellness game and use it consistently.
Conveniently, the app offers a 14-day free trial when you select the annual subscription and a seven-day free trial when you select the monthly option, so you can see how you like it (and if you stay on track for up to two weeks – that’s dedication!)
Is Calm better than Headspace?
Calm, another app whose mission is to “improve your health and happiness,” according to its site, is commonly compared side-by-side with Head space. Why? Because it’s free, although it doesn’t have the full-fledged features that Headspace is known for.
After trying Calm as well, I felt like it was more like typing “quick meditation” on YouTube and achieving quick gratification to check it off my agenda for the day. However, I found Headspace’s approach more rewarding because I can (1) follow a specific program, (2) track my progress, and (3) customize my meditations exactly how I want them.
While any form of meditation is beneficial and (sometimes) invigorating, I recommend Headspace’s free trial over the Calm free experience. Headspace offers a host of beginner-friendly courses if you haven’t yet harnessed your namaste power to its full potential (or at all), so you’ll be well-equipped with everything the orange relief app has to offer. .
Is Headspace Good for Anxiety?
Even though I don’t go to a therapist or have never been diagnosed with anxiety, I can attest that Head space calmed my mind of anxious thoughts. If you’re too pensive, sometimes let the little things get to you, or find yourself dwelling on intrusive thoughts, Headspace is a nice getaway from your brain that just needs a rest.

However, Headspace is wonderful as a precursor to any stress-related feelings (for example, before anxious feelings arise). I found this especially true as I was reorganizing my budget and taking his “Financial Stress Management” course. I enjoyed how it always guided me through deep breaths and informed me about emotionally sound money management at the same time.
Plus, Headspace’s Sleep Library was like my favorite white noise podcasts, only better. The app truly takes wellness from head to toe, morning to night, so you can be the best version of yourself and, in turn, encourage others to be the best versions of themselves- same.
