Graduate Evanston – Hotel Review | Condé Nast Traveler

Why reserve? The Graduate pays homage to Northwestern University in Evanston with a retro-collegiate vibe that doesn’t take academia too seriously.
Set the scene What do Zooey Deschanel, Meghan Markle and Eddie Vedder have in common? Besides fame, they all attended Northwestern University at Evanston and are featured in the caricature among 16 well-known alumni in the Graduate’s Gallery. Occupying the 1928 Colonial Revival aparthotel The Homestead, the 119-room newcomer nods to the Wildcats in flashes of purple (purple and white are school colors) but keeps the tone teacher-friendly, with tweed sofas, art flea market groupings, Persian-inspired rugs and chess tables. Expect crowds of families and well-heeled alumni on Big Ten football days.
The backstory Part of a group of hotels located in university towns. Graduate Hotels is based in Chicago and this is their first project near their home (Evanston is a suburb of Chicago’s First Ring).
The rooms The pride of the university echoes the use of purple in the rooms, which are wallpapered and draped in plaid, and furnished with vintage-style sofas and armchairs. Paintings of nearby Lake Michigan hang above the beds. Feels like a 40s student.
Food and drink The Trophy Room invites fans and guests to gather around the fireplace or belly up at the wooden bar to relive the glory days. Due to the pandemic, the restaurant is on hiatus and is expected to return in October; the bar is currently open during limited hours and serves light fare including salads and sandwiches.
The neighborhood / area The leafy Northwestern campus is just a few blocks away, as is bustling downtown Evanston, full of independent restaurants and shops. The beaches and parks along Lake Michigan Beach are a short walk east.
For families The decor and spirit of the Evanston Graduate go a long way in selling Northwestern to families and potential students. Pet-friendly rooms cost an additional $ 25 per night.
Accessibility Yes.
Nothing to report? If you’re coming for football, expect a two-night minimum stay.
