About 8 years ago, I made my first and last visit to the Blue Lagoon restaurant at Disneyland Paris. I had one of the most wonderful meals of my life at Disneyland Paris, it was a dream come true to eat at this wonderful restaurant. In 2017, the Blue Lagoon became Captain Jack’s: The Pirates’ Restaurant, the menu has been changed to be mainly fish-based and no longer really appealed to me.
Fast forward, and now the menu is a balanced mix of fish and other dishes, each with a unique Caribbean twist. So it was time to try again.
The restaurant itself is a masterpiece of the imagination, as is the attraction that you start inside and move on to an “outside” environment (of course, in reality, you are always there. ‘inside). It’s night in the Caribbean and dinner time, new restaurant owner Jack Sparrow has created some new dishes to try.
Captain Jack’s hasn’t changed too much from the Blue Lagoon, a few tweaks here and there to add pirate flags and Jack Sparrow research posters, but nothing that feels too out of place – the theme here is very subtle. The big improvement is that the lighting has been increased so you don’t have to sit in near darkness which was a problem in the old restaurant. Fortunately, this additional lighting doesn’t have too much of an impact on the ride.
Starter: Cod fritters
I ordered the cod fritters which came with a creole coleslaw and tamarind sauce. This dish is not too big but the fried cod in the sauce with a little cabbage mixed well.
The plate wasn’t too overbearing with 5 cod fritters and a tiny little coleslaw, I found this the perfect size for a starter, it just whetted my appetite for what was to come. A big dislike for me is when a starter could almost be substituted for a main course, that sort of thing ruins the meal because you are full by the time the dishes arrive. Fortunately, we are all fine here.
Main course: tender beef with jalapeño salsa and mashed sweet potatoes
The main event of this meal was the Tender Beef. A good piece of beef should rip elegantly, that’s fine. A fork and chunks of beef fall off and can be combined with mashed sweet potatoes, salsa or even eaten on their own. The beef tastes great and had no cartilage – well done from me!
I have to admit I had never tried mashed sweet potato before, not because I don’t like sweet potato, it’s just not something I had ever considered. That changes from now on, the mash here tasted great, neither too creamy nor too hard, it hit a sweet spot somewhere in the middle.
I really enjoyed this dish, it’s one of the most expensive on the menu and not on the menus, but worth every penny.
Dessert: Rice pudding with mango puree
For me, it was the real island taste of summer. Nothing says summer like Mango, and here it was plentiful. First of all, this rice pudding is served cold, a little surprise but not unpleasant. Second, it’s covered with a layer of coca dust which only spices it up a bit. I really enjoyed this desert and would order it over and over again.
Captain Jack’s is a real surprise entry on my list of favorite Disneyland Paris restaurants. The menu is incredibly varied and offers everything from fish and chicken, to beef and salads. The thematic environment is to die for, and the Cast Members don’t rush you through your meal (I was in the restaurant for about 2 hours). Speaking of Cast Members, Disneyland Paris really excels in table service, the actors are always extremely friendly and caring, it was no different here at Captain Jack’s.
