The Classics #9: SEGA Rally Championship – The Mother of All Racing Arcades

Kick-starting our classics weekend we’ve got the retro, badass arcade racing game, SEGA Rally Championship! Yes our Classics #9 is the arcade favourite back in the days and the 1995 game title for the SEGA Saturn. SEGA Rally Championship brought many things t the table, with it’s unique feature of being able to play on different surfaces – asphalt, gravel and mud. This was a big step for racing at that time and something that found a place in many people’s heart which has helped to build the foundation of modern games today.

The car handling of the Toyota Celica Sixth Generation and the Delta HF Intergrale were superb, having a great feel in handling whilst driving around scenic tracks from the mountains to the urban city. Just looking back at it rushes all the memories back as a little kid and how fun it was. Competitive play with my brother was simply fun – I saw myself more as a Celica person and himself as a Delta. There was little to say, the simple arcade game with the timer running out and passing as much AI racers was just thrilling and enjoyable.

Even remembering the distinct navigator who points out the kind of turns was humorous – ‘long medium right…maybe’. Maybe. SEGA made it humorous, characterised and just simply like no other game. If there was one definitive racer on the SEGA Saturn, it was SEGA Rally Championship.
