The Classics #11: Destruction Derby 2 – More Destruction, More Derby

Destruction Derby

Oh Destruction Derby 2. I still remember how you popularised cars bashing into each other – the opposite way that EA went with the Need for Speed series back in the days. Don’t get me wrong, the original 1995 Destruction Derby was great, introducing the wreckless and destructive mechanics on the Playstation, Sega Saturn and MS-DOS platforms, however I thought the sequel polished on the mechanics and features of the series.

The developer Psygnosis Interactive later went on and created the successful Driver Series, expanding the car experience than what Destruction Derby 2 offered

Though it had the usual modes for your normal racing, Wrecking Racing and Stock Racing, it was all about the Destruction Derby mode. An arena full of cars that drive at full speed into the center, smashing into everyone to be the last one standing and muster the most points. That mode was down-right mayhem, crazy and adrenaline pumping to try and not get hit, with that nearly impossible to last outside a couple of seconds.

This arena gameplay video below shows EXACTLY what I’m talking about – absolute mayhem

It’s a game that inspired new games, most notably DiRT Showdown, bringing that experience to the modern day era. We appreciate DiRT Showdown’s efforts though we can only dream back to when Destruction Derby 2 made that experience. Thus, being our #11 classic for the weekend
