Sony Expects 10 Million PS Vitas To Be Sold By Next Fiscal Year

White PS Vita

Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment spoke to Reuters Japan about the prospects of the PS Vita and the expectations of the portable’s sales worldwide in the current fiscal year. He and the company expects 10 million PS Vitas to be sold worldwide by March 31, 2013, citing the holiday season is the main booster.

“The end-of-year holiday season is extremely important for handheld game consoles,” House said. “To that end, we’ve got showcase titles such as Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed coming out as well as our own first-party software.”

“We also want to strengthen the Vita’s online services, so we’ll be adding YouTube and Hulu apps. We want to build up those two pillars: games and online.”

May 21 – May 27 saw a decline in the overall Japanese Market with Vita sales reaching a low 6,675 units for that week. However, despite the lowest sales figure recorded, it maintained it’s 7% market share.

The new Crystal White PS Vita dropping before the holiday season is also a factor that will see a sales boost according to Sony. No figures have been released regarding the PS Vita sales figures since the start of the fiscal year in April though we may find Sony overestimating the influx of sales during the holidays as top releases also peak at this time.
