Microsoft E3 2012 Conference – Tomb Raider & Resident Evil 6 Gameplay

RE6

Two of the most anticipated games of both next year and E3 made an appearance at Microsoft’s conference and my word were they strong showings!

Tomb Raider was first on stage and it is clear how much she has evolved in only a year since her last showing. The demo was much more action packed with glimpses at fire fights; very very Uncharted like. In fact, the whole demo was very Uncharted like, but with added blood, sweat and tears! Gritty doesn’t do the tone justice as environments seemed to follow the strict colour scale of grey whilst the pathetic fallacy is simply sublime. There were a couple of zip wire moments and dramatic calm before the storm; overall showing an experience that is well worth all the anticipation.

Likewise, the Resident Evil 6 demo was equal parts terrifying and action packed as our beloved Leon scuttled through the infected streets. There was a huge amount of both brain eating zombies, explosions and a general theme of destruction and apocalyptic, all the while having an unnerving sense that was sadly lacking in Resident Evil 5. Although very short, the demo was jam packed and showed both the audience and global gamers that one of gamings most loved franchise was back, and this time, it was going all out!

A gaming obsessed student with a slightly worrying adoration for all things PlayStation! Hobbies include sleeping and eating chicken kievs. Believes the Uncharted series to be his little baby and Nathan Drake to be his soul mate.

I thought the Tomb Raider gameplay footage was the highlight of the show.  I also fully agree that it looked very much like Uncharted.  The incidental animations as Lara moved around the environment were great, as was the enemy reaction to noticing her – flipping the table over for cover looked really convincing.  Hopefully the final release will live up to what in my mind is now A LOT OF HYPE.

Resident evil 6 on the other hand didn’t look so great.  The suggestion was that the series was heading back to its survival horror roots and abandoning the over the top action that left many fans unmoved after chapter 5.  I don’t believe that the footage we saw was evidence of the change.
