Mass Effect 3 Ending Enrages Fans – Why Bioware shouldn’t do anything about it

ME3

I ranked Mass Effect 3′s ending pretty high in my list of terrible endings. Without spoiling anything, it was basically wrapping up an epic trilogy by throwing everything you’ve done out the window, and then having tiny different variations of the same terrible ending.I did finish the game and enjoyed it, but was left with a foul taste in my mouth.

Fans however, didn’t take a liking to having a foul taste in their mouth. They became outraged, and threw a frenzy on Twitter, insulting Bioware, and even started an online petition which has gotten tens of thousands of signatures. Now, this may just as well convince Bioware to create a new, less plot-holey ending, and leave everyone happy, but is that what we really want?

If we let this one get away, and let them put out a nicer ending for us, then what? Well, then it basically sets the base for a new standard in gaming, where developers can get away with having things such as terrible endings, and decide to fix it up when or if the fans complain. Who says they have to stop at JUST the endings? Developers can get lazy, just pump out a game with a bunch of plot-holes and then throw out some DLC to fill them up.  Remember when there wasn’t DLC? Games had less glitches and issues, because once a game was out, there was no fixing it, meaning more attention had to be paid  to make sure it was perfect. Now with the invention of DLC, games can be put out quicker, knowing that any big issues can just be patched up. So the real question is, how incomplete are we willing to receive our products as?

Now of course, there is a positive side. If Bioware does decide to listen to the fans, it shows that the gaming community can stand together and fight for things that they see unfit. Rise against the power and what not. It’ll show the developers and publishers that it’s the gamers who are in charge of the community and that they will not stand for getting slapped in the face. Gone are the days where the fans are left like they were cheated, and in are the days where no one will get cheated.

This is of course an issue that has pros and cons to both sides, but it also can affect the future of gaming. What I’d like to know, is what would you think. Leave a comment below about your take on the issue. If you haven’t yet, check out our Mass Effect 3 review.
